What “In Christ” Means: Union That Delivers Every Benefit of Election

The grace that chose us is manifested and realized in Christ’s redemptive work. The notion of being in Christ, in Christo is central to Paul’s theology and is masterfully interpreted by Calvin. Being in Christ means more than simply believing in Christ intellectually. It means a vital and organic union with Christ. It is through this union that the elect partakes of the benefits of election, cleansing from sin, justification, sanctification, and finally, glorification. Calvin also addresses the question that frequently arises. How can Christ be the foundation of election? If Christ is the second person of the Trinity, would this not mean that election is prior to Christ? Calvin responds brilliantly that election is made by the Father, yes, but is made in Christ and through Christ. God the Father’s eternal decree is a decree that necessarily involves the Son. The Father does not elect independently of the Son. He elects the people in Christ. There is also an important relational dimension here. Calvin understands that election is not merely juridical or legal but relational. We were chosen to be children of God as mentioned in Ephesians 1:5 and this sonship is always through Christ. Christ is the only begotten son and we the elect are adopted as sons in Christ. The filial relationship we have with God is always mediated by Christ and founded in Christ. Calvin also emphasizes that Christ is the pattern or measure of election. The elect are predestined to be conformed to the image of his son. Election is not merely for individual and isolated salvation. It is for a transformation that makes us like Christ.
