Nothing Escapes God’s Plan: Calvin on Salvation in Ephesians 1

In introducing this concept, it is essential to understand that Calvin structured his theology around the absolute sovereignty of God. For him, nothing escapes divine knowledge and nothing and nothing occurs outside God’s permission. This understanding permeates his entire reading of Ephesians 1, where Paul presents a marvelous vision of salvation as a result of God’s eternal purpose. Calvin understands that predestination is not a marginal theme in scripture, but a central teaching that appears repeatedly in passages such as Romans 30, and especially in 2 Timothy 1:9, in Ephesians 1:3-14 where spiritual blessing is presented as the direct result of God’s choice before the foundation of the world. The importance of understanding predestination in Calvinist thought lies in the fact that it completely transforms our perception of salvation. It is not man who seeks God, but God who God who in his sovereign grace chooses those who will receive salvation. This does not diminish human responsibility or render the gospel irrelevant. On the contrary, it frees the believer from anxiety and anchors him in the security of divine grace.
