“But Now” in Romans 3:21 — The Gospel’s Great Turning Point

Paul loves hinge phrases. One of the greatest is in Romans 3:21: “But now…”

After pages of indictment — Jew and Gentile alike under sin — the gospel breaks in: “But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law… through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe” (Romans 3:21–22).

• Now: righteousness revealed, freely given (3:21–24).

The “but now” is not a soft improvement. It is an epochal shift in salvation history. God has acted publicly in Christ. The cross is not God changing His mind about holiness; it is God upholding justice while justifying the ungodly (Romans 3:26).

Read slowly here. Many Christian lives stay stuck before the hinge — knowing guilt, but not living on the far side of “but now.”
