The Scandal of the Cross: Why Paul Refused a Stylish Messiah

To Corinth — a city impressed by status and speech — Paul refuses to market a stylish Messiah.

“We preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called… the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Corinthians 1:23–24).

Deeper meaning

The cross overturns what the world calls wisdom. God chooses the weak to shame the strong (1:27). So Christian ministry cannot be built on personality cults or rhetorical flash. Paul comes “in weakness and in fear,” determined to know nothing except Jesus Christ and Him crucified (2:1–2).

If your faith rests on human dazzle, it will collapse when the speaker leaves. If it rests on God’s power, it can endure a Corinth — and a cross.
