Christ Jesus Came Into the World to Save Sinners: A Trustworthy Saying

Paul hands Timothy a saying “trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance”:

“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost” (1 Timothy 1:15).

Deeper meaning

Paul does not say “I was the foremost.” Present tense humility remains. The gospel that saved him still defines him.

This saying guards ministry from two failures: 1. Treating sin lightly. 2. Treating sinners as beneath mercy.

Christ’s patience toward Paul becomes a pattern for those who would believe (1:16). Leadership in the letters to Timothy is therefore gospel-formed: sound doctrine married to love that issues from a pure heart, good conscience, and sincere faith (1:5).
