Dead in Sin, Alive by Grace: Ephesians 2 on Salvation Through Faith

“And you were dead…” (Ephesians 2:1). Paul’s anthropology is severe so that grace can be stunning.

Then the gospel verbs arrive: “But God, being rich in mercy… made us alive together with Christ… By grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God” (2:4–8).

Deeper meaning

• Salvation is resurrection language: made alive, raised, seated with Christ (2:5–6).
• Faith is the open hand, not the wage claim (2:8–9).
• Good works are not the root but the path prepared beforehand for us to walk in (2:10).

Then Paul turns horizontal: the cross makes one new humanity, killing hostility, granting access in one Spirit to the Father (2:14–18). Vertical grace creates communal peace.
