“Imitate Me as I Imitate Christ”: Paul’s Daring Call to Leadership

Paul dares a sentence modern leaders fear: “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1).

Deeper meaning

He is not recruiting a personality cult. He is offering an embodied curriculum. The gospel needs to be seen in a life — cruciform, affectionate, hardworking, tear-stained (Acts 20:18–19; Philippians 3:17).

Earlier he said he became all things to all people that by all means he might save some (1 Corinthians 9:22), yet he disciplines his body (9:27). Flexibility for mission; rigidity against his own sin.
