“To Live Is Christ, to Die Is Gain”: Paul’s Life Motto in Philippians 1

Paul’s life motto is compressed into six words: “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21).

Deeper meaning

If living equals Christ, then every circumstance becomes a venue for His honor — even imprisonment, which Paul says has advanced the gospel (1:12–13). If dying is gain, then death is not loss of the self’s project but arrival at fuller union.

This liberates the church from panic. Paul can rejoice when Christ is proclaimed, even from mixed motives (1:15–18). The center holds.
